2018 Melbourne Workshop & Industry Leader Discussion Forum – Understanding fatality exposure: Global insights into preventing life-altering injuries

Companies are becoming more sophisticated at limiting accidents that injure workers. However, despite advances, serious injuries and fatalities (SIF) continue to happen with alarming frequency. As at July 2018, preliminary data shows overall fatalities across industries are up on the previous year with 76 Australian workers killed at work in 2018 – 31.6% of these fatalities occurred within transport, postal and warehousing.

With over 80% of serious injuries occurring while doing high risk routine work, these high severity events are both predictable and preventable. DEKRA’s business partnerships with many of the world’s largest chemical, oil and gas, transportation, utilities, pharmaceutical, and agriculture companies (including NASA, BNSF, CSX, Kelworth Trucking, Shell, and Union Pacific) have found that on average, roughly 21% of all incidents have SIF potential. We also know that SIF events have different precursors than other events. These exposures and events require the special attention of senior management and unique approaches to mitigate the risks associated with them.

This workshop will be led by an international safety expert from the UK and followed by an open discussion forum with transport industry safety leaders sharing their insights on SIF prevention.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the causes of SIFs and how to prevent them.
  • Explore high-impact leadership behaviours that reduce exposure to serious events.
  • Discuss ways to track potential SIF with dedicated metrics.
  • Learn the unique factors of SIFs and how to raise awareness of them.
